Michael Sullivan,
LLPC / Drummer / Drum-builder
Michael began his music career at the age of eight with the purchase of his first drum-set. His list of drumming influences started with Animal (of the Muppet Show) then migrated towards the likes of John Bonham of Led Zeppelin and now rests with great drummers like Tito Puente and Doudou Ndiaye Rose.
Michael started making drums and organizing drum and dance circles in 1991 when he lived in Boulder, Colorado. Since that time Michael has created more than 900 drums (all built from local, raw materials). He still organizes drum and dance circles, now in the northern Michigan area (see the

Throughout Michael’s life he has created and performed in a wide variety of events. He has designed and implemented workshops in Emmet, Charlevoix, and Antrim county schools, providing hundreds of children the opportunity to step out of their normal routine and into a world of cultural music, dance, and environmental education. Michael has provided opportunities for people to make their own drums and has organized Master African Drum classes and Master African Dance classes with live musicians since 1998.

As director of Visions of Peace Drum and Dance Company, Michael provides positive messages and experiences to his local community through the performing arts while at the same time supporting professional artists with paying gigs. Michael was awarded Honorable mention in the 1999 Crooked Tree juried art show for his Northwood’s Ashiko drum. He has shown his work at The Naropa University, The BlissFest Music Festival, and The Harbor Springs 4th of July art show. In addition, he was nominated for the “performer of the year” award by his artist peers in 2001.
Michael graduated from the Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, with a degree in Environmental Studies with an emphasis in Horticulture and Native American Studies and a minor in Traditional Arts. In 2004, Michael received his Master’s of Arts degree in Professional Counseling from Central Michigan University. He is currently employed as a Counselor at Ferris State University in Big Rapids; during the summer months he is employed at Psychological Services in Petoskey as a Career and Educational Counselor.
